Our Story
Village Nursery School was established at First United Methodist Church, West Lafayette, IN, in 1972, with the philosophy and educational understanding that young children learn best in an atmosphere of purposeful and productive play experiences. We utilize Zoo-phonics, Handwriting Without Tears, and Minds In Motion curricula. The learning activities planned, the selection of educational toys and materials, and even the organization of the space and the schedule give children the foundation of learning they need to succeed throughout their academic careers and beyond. Our programs serve children ages 1-5.
There are changing weekly themes that give the children an exposure to many interesting topics, with the goals of building vocabulary and general knowledge. In the course of their years at Village, culminating in our Pre-K class, the children are well prepared for entering kindergarten.
We are very proud of the success of our “alumni.” It is our goal that VNS children become independent, self confident, curious learners who work well with others. Besides receiving an excellent pre-reading and math foundation, VNS children also learn how to be a member of a group as they sing together, participate in interesting discussions, take turns with the weather chart and calendar, or listen to a story. They also learn to complete “assignments”, follow multi-step verbal directions, wait their turn to speak, and be responsible for their school items.
A Note from Our Director
I came to VNS as a parent looking for a play based preschool that would help prepare my oldest socially, give him the structure of a school environment, and help him to find the joy in learning. Two more kids and four years later, I had the opportunity to teach at VNS. I love working with children and families and believe the preschool years are an important time to prepare socially, emotionally, and educationally for a lifetime love of learning.
Professionally, I have a degree in Child Development and worked in Early Intervention as a Child Development Specialist before taking time off to be home with my children. I was a teacher at Village for 6 years before starting as the Director.
Village Nursery School offers our staff, students, and families a true support network. Our staff works tirelessly in what we consider a labor of love to create a loving, playful, and safe environment in which every child can learn and grow. Our students discover the joy of learning through play, and our families create connections that last well beyond the pre-school years. Welcome to our Village!
